Palenque town - Day 9

When I woke up Augustus came in talking about the pool and parrot. First we went and talked to the parrot. It was funny when he laughed. Then we went swimming. Angela said that the water was warmer than her shower. We played 4 different games.
We are now in Palenque.

I saw talking parrot. I won its heart. It didn’t like anyone but me.

The motel had a parrot who could say a few things in Spanish. ‘El burro eres tu.’ ‘ anda le’, ‘ya se fue’, and ‘la cucaracha’ He also said ahh and ehh, which he liked to say because Gusty repeated them after him, eventually getting excellent at the parrot accent. Gusty liked him and vice versa. The maid said the parrot did not like adults but he did like Gusty, all 80 pounds of him. Gusty fed him and carried him around on a stick and on his shoulder. Once when Gusty tried to let Virginia carry him on her shoulder he began to fall off and grabbed hold of her ear with his sharp beak, bringing blood.

We visited Palenque most of the day, it is a tourist town with a generous smattering of tourists from many countries even if this is not the high part of the season. Every two hours the Mexican Army drove a couple of trucks loaded with soldiers in combat gear and guns through town, probably as a show of force like Wilson ordered Ft. Sam Houston to do in 1917 into Fredericksburg to intimidate the Germans living there. We lolled in the park for a while and I got a $5.00 haircut. I saw one albino, Naomi says it is a genetic problem with the Lacadone natives because they are such a small ethnic group and intermarry and inbreeding is becoming a problem for them like it is for the Amish in America. There was a smattering of colorful dresses usual to the Lacadones.
